Wednesday Picks - Silk Road

I was so excited when Cathy brought over this vintage coat for our latest "Wednesday Picks" feature.  I immediately wanted to pair it with a hat... or in this case a vintage 60s "turban."  I had fallen in love with it earlier at her store, it captured the nostalgic 1920s glamour I remember feeling when looking through my grandfather's books  - and alas I had found one that fit me perfectly.  I combined these vintage items with a scoop neck dress with metallic "wings" by Love Brigade and a gorgeous necklace by AK Vintage with interconnected vintage brass hexagons that Lori from Redeem pointed out to me.  I loved the bohemian feel of this outfit and the juxtaposition of different eras of fashion mixed with a modern simple dress.  All items pictured are available at Treasury and Redeem

Here are some of our pictures:

I really do need more bows

I still miss Phoebe Philo at Chloe, these past few seasons haven't been the same without her.... until maybe now. Hannah MacGibbon's Fall 2009 Collection was speckled with little gems, literally and figuratively and was, coincidentally, one of my favorites on the runway. I loved her oversized coats, cuffed lazy trousers and flowy evening gowns, but my favorites were definitely the shoes. The bow & crystal pumps and ballet flats managed to combine everything girly and pretty in a single shoe and if you wear a size 37 (like me) you can get them now on sale at Browns - that's a hint that my birthday is coming up soon :)

Purl and Slip

This past week I sat down with my good friend and Editor of the District Cut to catch up on life, drink tea, hear his stories about Milan Fashion Week and talk about our mutual love for statement knits.  This prompted me to go on a search for knitting patterns and now I've sort of become obsessed with knitting every possible wearable (and non-wearable) item.  I also may have bought a couple dozen balls of yarn, I couldn't pass up cashmere/alpaca blends on sale!  Luckily, I found some wonderful patterns to follow which are actually pretty easy to do.  If you are new to knitting or would like to learn, the Lion Brand website has a very helpful Learning Center, full of tutorials, pictures and videos HERE.

These are some of my favorite patterns:

Folded Landscape

Always interested in new takes on old themes, I fell (swooned) for this tableware the moment I saw it. The creator, Ruth Gurvich is an Argentine artist who studied and now lives in Paris. She developed the shape of these porcelain pieces by first making folded paper models. In fitting fashion, the tableware is made by Nymphenburg, who has been manufacturing porcelain for 260 years. Certainly these pieces are not cheap. But they will look just as fantastic to your ancestors eyes 100 years from now.

Coven at Fashion week in Rio

Winter/Fall Fashion week is in full swing in Brazil - it's actually down to its last two days - and I have found a few new favorite designers.  Coven by Rebehy Queiroz was one of my favorites this season, the knitwear line was infused with futuristic silhouettes, metallic palettes and edgy details.  See the entire collection HERE.

These are a few of my favorite looks.

Sports Wear

If you liked the Alexander Wang Spring 2010 runway show as much as I did, you might be excitedly waiting to get your hands on some of his accessories, like the gorgeous and versatile  Donna Hobo bag or any of his studded items.  Now, one of my favorite online stores OTTE is taking pre-orders plus giving you 10% off for a limited time. I'll take all of them please.

Wednesday Picks - The old and the new

We've been having so much fun with our "Wednesday Picks" in the last couple months that we decided to include Redeem, another one of our favorite local DC boutiques, in the feature. Despite blizzard-like winds, Cathy and I made our way across the street to play dress-up with Redeem's lovely owner Lori. She helped us select some really amazing items from her store, some of my favorites were the Bunny and Deer leather puffy brooches by the wildly creative Moriah and Alice of Feral Childe.

Mixing vintage with basics and bold accessories is a daily ritual for some of us, so we thought it would be fun to play with color and proportions for this look. If you are new to this- start with basics you are already familiar with (jeans, t-shirt) and add a simple vintage jacket plus a bold accessory (over-sized pendant, colorful belt). It's a really easy way to add versatility to your wardrobe.

All items pictured in this look are available at Redeem and Treasury.

Let it snow.....

My friends and I had a post Christmas party to celebrate, among other things - Christmas snow, small rodents, ethnic foods and friendship. We had a wonderful time laughing and playing MindFlex which I am frighteningly good at. Here are some of my pictures, aren't the little mice adorable?
