22 West is the best new condo building in the city. From afar it may resemble the cookie cutter all-glass buildings we see everywhere. But look carefully, the building takes advantage of its oddly shaped lot to look different from every angle. Even better the building is alive, with zinc panels that will change patina over time from oxidization and built-in planters that hold vegetation. The building is designed with occupants in mind not street voyeurs. The facade is dotted with setbacks, that shade the interior from the sun, allow for semi-private balconies and terraces, and keep the floor-to-ceiling windows confined to just a few walls.
Sadly, this building should be near the P Street Whole Foods not in the K Street business district where the suits have more money than taste. The Ritz, located next door, is better left to the suits.
